12 STEPS TO DENGUE-PROOF YOUR HOME

Arm your family against that small bite that may turn out to be lethal.

BY Lynda Corpuz

JUNE 2011
It begins with a bite. The seemingly insignificant pinprick of that small, black-and-white striped, female Aedes egypti mosquito can cause mild to incapacitating high fever, a severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint aches, and rashes, which can last from three to 14 days. We all know the signs as dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection that has increased 30-fold in the last 50 years, according to the World Health Organization.

Severe dengue or dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a complication commonly seen in children under the age of 15. It is characterized by high fever, often with enlargement of the liver, and in severe cases, circulatory failure. Two to five days after the onset of fever, the patient rapidly deteriorates.

Unfortunately, there is no specific treatment for dengue or vaccine to prevent it. Treatments usually consist of rest, the replacement of lost fluids, and in severe cases, blood transfusion. The mosquito, however, is not the sole culprit of dengue. We, too, are responsible for the spread of the virus if we don’t clear possible breeding grounds for mosquitoes in our home and community.

Protect yourself

The Department of Health (DoH) reported a 100 percent increase in the number of dengue cases in Metro Manila in only the first two months of 2011. Here’s how to bring down those numbers:

Repel. While it does not mosquito-proof you, using an insect repellent reduces the chance of being bitten.

Choose wisely. Internationally, DEET (N.N Diethylmeta- toluamide)—the most common active ingredient for repellent products—has been proven the most effective insect repellent ingredient. There are also other repellents available in the market but they vary in effectiveness and work differently per individual. Citronella, for instance, is only effective for shorter durations and needs to be applied more often. Read the label of the repellant you are buying. Due to possible toxicity, DEET-containing repellants should be used with caution in children.

Protect your home

The DoH-Center for Health Development-Metro Manila stressed the importance of eliminating stagnant water around you. Mosquitoes can lay their eggs and breed on still water the size of a 25-centavo coin! To avoid inadvertently storing possible breeding grounds:

Keep dry. At all times, turn the pails and watering cans over and store them under shelter. Drain the water in plant pot plates. Cover rarely used gully traps and, if necessary, replace them with non-perforated ones and install anti-mosquito valves. Do not put trays or receptacles beneath and/or on top of any air-conditioning unit or water dispenser as these are also potential mosquito breeding sites. If you have a swimming pool, make sure it is properly maintained and have drainage problems fixed right away.

Plant well. Always clean and scrub the pot plates thoroughly to remove mosquito eggs or avoid using them at all, if possible. Also, loosen soil from potted plans to prevent stagnant water from accumulating on the surface of the hardened soil. Every other day, change the water in vases and clean and scrub the inner sides of them. Wash roots of flowers and plants thoroughly as mosquito eggs can stick to them easily.
Protect your community

The DoH also urged the involvement of barangays to keep their communities dengue-free. “We want them to be aware that DoH can only do this much, but the bulk of the work is really with the barangay,” says Dr. Irma Asuncion of the health department. Mix civic consciousness in your fight against dengue:

Get connected. In the same way the DoH urged barangay leaders to come up with ordinances to make health and disease prevention their major agenda, you too can find out if your barangay has an ongoing anti-dengue campaign you can participate in, like a clean-up drive.

Be aware. If you live in Quezon City, Manila, Pasig City, Caloocan City, Valenzuela City, and Parañaque City—identified as having the most number of dengue cases last year—be especially vigilant in keeping your surroundings clean. When the DoH launches Dengue Awareness Month this June, follow the preventive measures they will announce.

Eye Care Tips For Adults and Children By Ruth Cracknell

It is important to take care of your eyes while reading, and one of the most important of all eye care tips is proper lighting.

LIGHTING
Consider your lighting. While proper, scientific lighting is available today for everyone, an overwhelming number of people regard their lighting fixtures from the viewpoint of their decorative value rather than of their value to the eyes. There is no reason why a light cannot be both decorative and useful, but it is not common sense to select it primarily for its decorative value.

The lighting companies frequently offer free services in analyzing your proper lighting needs and there are many free pamphlets which provide the same service. Good light is essential to eye health, and bad light affects the eyes as surely as bad air affects the lungs.

In planning lamps to meet your reading needs there are three essentials to keep in mind:

1. There must be enough light.
2. There must be no glare.
3. There must be good general illumination in the room. That is, the room should be about as bright as the page you are reading. So don't use a reading lamp and turn on no other lights.

Research has just begun to make clear to us the vital effect of lighting on vision and on the general health. Matthew Luckiesh, in Light, Vision and Seeing, pointed out the far-reaching effects of proper lighting in offices and factories:

"Among the tangible and intangible benefits," he writes, "arising from high see-levels and good seeing conditions in general are:

1. Increased rate of performance of useful work done which results in decreased costs.
2. Increased accuracy which results in better work and less waste of materials, thereby decreasing costs.
3. Increased ease of seeing which results in the conservation of human resources, such as eyesight, energy and time, through the reduction in eyestrain, nervous tension, eye-fatigue, general fatigue, annoyance and mental fatigue.
4. Increased safety through quick, certain and easy seeing which reduces the enormous material and human losses due to preventable accidents.
5. Increased morale resulting directly or indirectly from the foregoing and from other psychological factors such as cheerful surroundings which are an inevitable result of good seeing conditions." Reading under a pool of light in an otherwise darkened room seems to be a widespread practice with attendant strain.

This is one of the least known eye care tips. Not only should the room itself be adequately lighted but, for eye ease and for maximum light, it is a great help if the walls themselves are light in color. Dark colors absorb light while light colors reflect it. The darker your walls, draperies, and the upholstery of your furniture the more light you are losing.

As glare causes eyestrain, always sit so that the light comes over your left shoulder and falls directly on the printed page. Never read facing a light.

When reading by artificial light, a tall table lamp with a 150-watt bulb is recommended. Place the lamp on the table to the left of your chair. In order to avoid reflected glare on the printed page, try this simple test: Place a small pocket mirror in the center of the page. If the light bulb is reflected in the mirror, move the lamp until there is no place on the printed page where your eyes can see the light in the mirror.

People who have a pet chair in which they like to read overlook the fact that there may be no adequate light near the page. People start to read by bright daylight, become engrossed, and do not notice that as twilight falls, the light grows dimmer and dimmer, until they are straining to make out the words on the printed page.
The problems of lighting and posture are important for the healthy eye as well as for the eye that suffers from some defect. In the case of the latter, their neglect is little short of criminal abuse. Take heed of the above eye care tips, and many benefits will result.

Eye Care - The Dos and Don'ts By Hillary G Glaser

Taking care of our eyes is so simple and prevents a number of irritating and harmful eye conditions and diseases. However, so few know how to correctly take care of their eyes and ensure long-term protection and perfect vision. Here are some of the basic dos and don'ts to optimally care for your eyes.

Don't: spend hours in front of a TV or computer screen as it causes tired and strained eyes which take a heavy toll on ones vision and cause headaches and other related problems.

Do: take regular eye breaks and try to remove your contact lenses or prescription glasses for a few moments while you force your eyes to focus on something outside the window or anything other than your screen. If you've overdone it, soothe tired eyes by dipping cotton pads into chilled milk and place on closed eyes for 10 -15 minutes, while completely relaxed.

Don't: wear contact lenses for extended periods.

Do: take them out every 12 hours, never sleep with them in and give your eyes a full day's rest at least once a week and wear your eyeglasses instead.

Don't: rub your eyes with dirty, unwashed hands. This only serves to spread germs and cause eye problems.

Do: Wash your hand thoroughly, with soap, before touching your eyes, eyelashes, or eyelids.

Don't: partake in any kind of work or sport that may compromise your eyes without the correct protective eye wear.

Do: always think ahead and ensure to wear protective eye wear when doing certain sports or jobs.

Don't: think that you only need to visit the eye doctor or optometrist when you stop being able to see clearly, or start experiencing headaches.

Do: Go for regular checkups, at least annual, when caring for your eyes. For maximum effect, when you find out that your prescription has changed, always buy glasses frames with the suitable lenses as soon after your check-up as possible.

Don't: refrain from buying eyeglasses because you think that the frames will go against your fashion sense.

Do: Check out your eyeglasses selection online. With hundreds of designer prescription glasses available,
you'll be bowled over by the sheer availability of frames which fit your every need.

Don't: not buy eyeglasses because of the traditional expense attached to them.

Do: look to buy glasses online and take advantage of the savings that are available there. Fast Fact - eyeglasses online are sold at up to 70% less than those sold offline without compromising on quality.

Don't: wear heavy frames that can add stress to your eyes and nasal cavities.

Do: choose light frames that tend to be more comfortable.

Don't: ever go out into the sun without protection for your eyes.

Do: always ensure to wear either sunglasses or eyeglasses with a suitable sun-protective tint for those UVA/UVB rays. If you wear prescription lenses, be sure to order a pair of prescription sunglasses to ensure your all-round eye care. You can also order regular eyeglasses with a transition lens which goes dark when outside and back to a regular lens indoors.

At the end of the day, prevention is always better than the cure. Take care of your eyes and prevent eye strain and headaches by following the tips above and never buy glasses with an outdated eyeglasses prescription.

Sunglasses for Safe Driving By Hillary G Glaser

Driving is an act that comes with the responsibility to do everything possible to ensure the safest driving experience for yourself and others. Not being able to see properly will affect your ability to do this. Here are some tips for safe driving.

Driving - an activity that puts yourself, those in the car with you, and those on the road with you, at risk every moment! Wouldn't it be great if everyone thought like this? If everyone accepted what a huge responsibility it is when you sit behind the wheel.

When learning to drive, a common phrase will be that you have to worry about others on the road, sometimes, even more than you have to worry about your own driving; however, this does not excuse the driver from doing everything necessary to ensure safety on the roads.

There are numerous elements that will, or can, interfere with your safe driving experience, these include: problems with the car, misbehaving children in the back, another crazy driver who has taken the road as his own personal playground, and your eyes. The latter includes the effect of the glare of the sun, as well as one's distance vision and whether it is suitable enough for you to be able to see and catch every possible sign post and threat.

A thorough annual eye examination will ensure that you know your distance vision limitations (if there are any) and that you can buy prescription glasses to make up for what is missing. However, even with appropriate prescription eyeglasses for night driving, during the day drivers may find themselves struggling to see through the glare of the sun and this can result in tragedy all round.

The only way to drive safely during the day is to own a pair of sunglasses. After eye surgery, patients should be especially careful about their driving ability and make sure to wear sunglasses during the day. If you wear eyeglasses and do not want the bother of having to change between regular prescription eyeglasses and your prescription sunglasses, there is the option of photochromic lenses. The lenses change from clear to tint when exposed to UV light and return back to clear when the UV light is removed.

The color of the lens of the sunglasses is something to consider as certain colors will distort your view of the colors that you see. Some tips: green or gray colored lenses are said to maintain true color, while brown causes color distortion but improves contrast. Orange and yellow lenses are great for contrast and depth perception but severely increase color distortion. Yellow is often worn by drivers at night as they enhance contrast to a degree. Red is said to minimize color distortion completely. You should also note that turquoise lenses are good to wear if in medium or light conditions as they enhance contrast without causing color distortion.

For night driving, while wearing regular prescription eyeglasses, you should have your lenses protected with an anti-glare coating so that the street lights, or lights from approaching vehicles, will not have you seeing blindly and causing an accident as a result. Even if buying photochromic lenses for day driving, the same rule applies: have them coated with an anti-glare coating.

So take responsibility for your driving! Get your eyeglasses prescription updated and buy glasses with a color tint and anti-glare coating so that you can be sure that your lack of vision will not be the cause of tragedy on the roads.

adsense by Ary Filho

To make it easier I supplied two lists with the steps that are necessary to use Google AdSense with success on your website.
It is required that your site's design and content is finished and that have a Google AdSense account.
If you follow the links on this page a second browser window opens with the corresponding page on Google's website.
10 Steps to Google AdSense
AdSense for Content AdSense for Search
1. Login at Google AdSense with your user data.
2. Create color palettes and styles that fit to your website's style.

3. Decide where on your pages the ads and search forms shall appear.
4. Determine one or more ad formats for each position.

5. Create one Custom Channel for each of these combinations.

7. Insert the code into your website at the corresponding position (please pay attention to the note at bottom).
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for each channel.
9. Wait a few days and analyze the Google AdSense reports.

10. Decide what you want to do for optimization.
Hinweis
If you use the same ads on several pages of your website - the same HTML code - it may be very handy if you store this code in a single file. This file must be included into the actual page. This way it is not necessary to run thru all pages and manually change the code several times. And it avoids the danger to accidentally ignore page, too.
There are different approaches to this. Some examples:
* When creating the website (Offline)
o If you create your website using Microsoft FrontPage, Macromedia Dreamweaver or a similar tool, use templates to store the code inside. Templates will automatically be inserted at the corresponding position on each page.
o Almost all HTML editors support the inclusion of files while uploading by defining appropriate tags inside the HTML code.
* When the pages are visited (Online)
o If your web host or your server supports Server Server Side Includes (SSI), you may store the files on the server and let the server automatically include them when the are requested from a browser. You easily find some detailed information on the web by typing SSI and HTML into Google.
Template and Channel Names
It may be very useful if you use a system to name color palettes, styles and templates to easily identify the corresponding ad blocks in reports. I'll show you an example I use:
Für Farb-Vorlagen:
Website Position Color palette Channel name

I tried to combine website title, ad position, ad format (only for the channels) and color palette to a meaningful name. Because Google allows only a very limited number of characters with the names you probably will have to use some meaningful abbreviations.

AdSense Profit From Google AdWords by Casey Yew

Advertisements collected through Google AdWords system are shown on AdSense websites. When an AdSense publisher starts to buy traffic through Google AdWords for his AdSense site, he becomes an AdSense arbitrager. AdSense arbitrage is one of the AdSense business strategies that publishers could implement to make AdSense profit.
Is AdSense arbitrage a fraud to Google? No, Google allows AdSense arbitrage. As a matter of fact, the more AdSense arbitrage, the more Google could make from AdWords.
The success of AdSense arbitrage depends on the amount spend on traffic and the profits AdSense arbitrager gets from AdSense so long the cost of buying traffic does not exceed the earnings from the AdSense.
AdSense arbitragers need to make good profit from AdSense to cover the cost. One way to boost AdSense profit is by creating contents with high paying keywords. These contents normally get ads that pay higher. Therefore, high paying keywords are necessary for a successful AdSense arbitrage.
Keyword research tools such as Digitalpoint Keyword Suggestion Tool are used to locate the most searched keywords. With these keywords, AdSense arbitragers can obtain a list of high paying keywords using Google AdWords. By maximizing bid for each keyword, arbitragers can obtain the estimated highest cost per click (CPC) for each keyword.
However, the estimated highest CPC of each keyword obtained from AdWords does not reflect the real competition for that keyword. The highest bid price could be raised by one advertiser whereas majority advertisers are bidding for the same keyword at lower price. Besides, the estimated highest CPC could not reflect the true CPC of each keyword at regional level. Cost per click in different regions can be different as the competition for the same keyword in each region varies. Nonetheless, based on this list of highest CPC, AdSense arbitragers are able to discover the potential market for arbitrage.
AdSense arbitragers will then build a website targeting a set of chosen high paying keywords. Proper use of meta tags, title text and good quality content would increase the relevancy of ads and hence help the website to get high paying ads.
Low paying keywords from the most searched keywords list are used in the AdWords campaign drive traffic to the new website. AdSense arbitragers can include as many low paying keywords as possible in AdWords campaign and start each keyword with a minimum bid.
Run the AdWords campaign for a week or two to get the average earning per click. Increase the bid price or broaden the low paying keywords list if it can increase your AdSense arbitrage profits. Many other form of paid traffic can be used for AdSense arbitrage. Many smaller pay per click search engines could bring decent traffic collectively for less money.
AdSense arbitrage depends on high click through rate (CTR). Well position and well blended-in ads will induce high click through rate. Quality contents that provide values will attract quality audiences. These targeted audiences are more likely to turn into customers for advertisers. The higher quality audience your website sends to advertiser's site, the less likely it would be smart priced.
The success of arbitrage can be shattered by unpredictable click through rate and fluctuation of keyword value. The cost spent on AdWords could easily exceed the profit from AdSense. The arbitrage process has to be monitored closely and constantly.
To capitalize the efforts and money spent on paid traffic, other form of monetized techniques such as affiliate marketing or name capturing form should be used to target those non converted AdSense audiences. With these mechanisms in place, efforts and money spent on paid traffic would not be wasted.
